Counselling usually involves
2 people, the counsellor and the client. Sometimes
it can involve the counsellor and several
clients…group therapy. It takes place
in a safe and private environment, where the
client can take time out to examine, reflect
and understand his or her difficulties and
problems. The relationship is based on equality
and respect.
The aim of individual counselling
is to help improve the every day way of being
of the client.
A major focus of counselling involves helping
the client to identify and work through his
or her problems and find effective coping
strategies so he or she may reach more of
their potential and restore a sense of well-being
in their lives.
This can be achieved by helping
the client to find solutions, make decisions,
and to develop
effective ways to deal with the stresses of
everyday life.
Counselling is also used to
explore the ‘deep rooted’, ‘unresolved’
problems that can block the client’s
personal power and capacity for self-regulation.
A HOLISTIC approach is adopted
that acknowledges Spirit, Mind and Body components
in the recovery and self-healing process.
